Here's what most junk removal companies (including us) cannot take, and where to bring those items instead.
Items We Cannot Take
1. Hazardous Chemicals & Materials
- Paint (oil-based and latex in liquid form)
- Solvents, thinners, and strippers
- Pesticides, herbicides, and insecticides
- Pool chemicals (chlorine, muriatic acid)
- Automotive fluids (brake fluid, transmission fluid)
- Cleaning chemicals in bulk
Why: Federal EPA regulations classify these as hazardous waste. Improper disposal can contaminate groundwater and soil.
Where to take them: Orange County Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center, 5901 Young Pine Rd, Orlando, FL 32829. Free for Orange County residents. Open Tue–Sat, 8 AM – 5 PM.
2. Asbestos-Containing Materials
- Old floor tiles (pre-1980)
- Pipe insulation
- Popcorn ceilings (pre-1980)
- Certain roofing materials
Why: Asbestos is a known carcinogen. Removal requires licensed abatement contractors with specialized equipment.
Where to go: Contact a licensed asbestos abatement company. In Florida, the DEP regulates asbestos removal.
3. Medical & Biohazard Waste
- Used needles and sharps
- Blood-contaminated materials
- Pharmaceutical waste
- Medical devices with biohazard risk
Why: Bloodborne pathogen regulations require specialized handling and incineration.
Where to go: Walgreens and CVS accept sharps containers. Contact Stericycle or a medical waste service for larger quantities.
4. Explosives & Ammunition
- Live ammunition
- Fireworks (commercial grade)
- Flares
- Gunpowder
Why: Transportation safety regulations prohibit these in standard waste vehicles.
Where to go: Contact the Orlando Police Department non-emergency line for ammunition disposal. Some gun shops accept old ammunition.
5. Radioactive Materials
- Smoke detectors (contain americium-241)
- Certain medical equipment
- Industrial gauges
Why: NRC regulations require specialized disposal.
Where to go: Return smoke detectors to the manufacturer. Contact a licensed radioactive waste handler for other items.
